After Munich, we decided it would be fun to do a couple smaller towns in Germany. After a detour through Austria and the Czech Republic, we arrived in Nuremberg. The home of both Hitler’s rallies and the Nazi trials, Nuremberg has done a respectable job of honoring their dark past with museums. We had originally wanted to stay in Bamberg and couldn’t find a hotel but after experiencing Nuremberg’s streets and eats, we were glad it worked out this way.
“People in the know” or maybe just people who read Lonely Planet find out about the little town of Bamberg. Walking around after dinner, we walked through a few local street festivals, accidentally walked into a private family party and sat along a quiet river on the edge of town. Soon, we began to understand why some say this could be one of Germany’s best cities.
We ended with Heidelberg and a hot, long walk with our backpacks on. Similar to the other two, Heidelberg is set up on a river but what sets it apart from both Bamberg and Nuremberg is it’s also in a valley. We arrived on Sunday and walked along the river to our hotel. As we strolled along, we saw locals playing soccer, volleyball, enjoying picnics with friends and absorbing the sunshine with their feet in the river. It was a brilliant welcome to this romantic city.
Off to Amsterdam…
